The #SliceofDowntown project began as a simple exercise in decompressing from the daily grind of being a professional photojournalist.

We often run from one tragedy to another, never taking time to deal with the sorrow, pain and images from our head. When compounded over time, without a mechanism to reset and slow down ones view of their world, you set yourself up to quickly burn out.

After a community tragedy, whether it be a fatality wreck, the drowning of a young child, or the loss of property due to fire or natural disaster, you could always find me walking slowly through downtown Waxahachie. Those outings, what the Australians call a walk-a-bout, was meant to clear my head and see the little things often missed in our fast-paced life.

I know this…it works for me. I don’t judge the results from the photographs taken, but from the peace in a troubled soul.
